The alleged problem of so-called "Race Hustlers" has been much-ballyhoo'd by folks on the right, but where exactly does this accusation come from? You might be surprised to know this is a 'gentrified' term, like a lot of other catch phrases that have become popular with conservatives. Why was this accusation first made, and towards whom was it directed? Understanding the history of terms like 'race baiter' or 'race agitator' can give us the full picture of why this accusation rings false when it's used by those who wish to silence conversations around racial equity and justice.
