By now, most people know that the version of the Pocahontas story that was presented in the 1995 Disney film is mostly fiction. But the story behind the composition of the film’s most famous song is not as well known. It was important to lyricist Stephen Schwartz to pay homage to the history and legacy of the Powhatan people on which the film is based, but in true American fashion, the source material he drew from as the inspiration for the song’s brilliant lyrics paints a through line to America’s long history of exploitation and misrepresentation of Native stories and voices.
