The debate over Tuskegee University's new dress code has sparked passionate conversations about bonnets, durags, slippers, and respectability politics. My own reaction surprised me, and it forced me to ask why I saw the issue differently than so many others. In this episode, I explore how my upbringing in a strict Pentecostal tradition shaped my instincts, why Black Americans have every reason to be skeptical of appearance-based rules, and how America's broader cultural and religious history also helps explain these expectations. Rather than choosing sides, I examine the overlapping histories that make this conversation so much more complicated than it first appears. It's a discussion about race, culture, institutions, and the stories we inherit, all through the lens of a debate that's much bigger than bonnets.
